Take your normal size for a relaxed fit. Size down if you want it closer to the body. Do not size up to allow for shrinkage — this blank is pre-shrunk, and you will just end up with a shirt that was always too big.
The cut is boxy on purpose
Comfort Colors 1717 is a tubular knit. That means the body is knitted as a continuous tube with no side seams running down your ribs. It is wider through the body and shorter through the length than a modern fitted tee.
Two things follow from that. The shirt hangs straight rather than tapering in at the waist, and it does not cling. If your reference point is a slim retail tee, this will feel roomier at the same label size.

Measure a shirt you already own
The most reliable method costs nothing. Take a t-shirt you like the fit of, lay it flat, and measure straight across from armpit to armpit. Double that number and you have the chest measurement. Compare it against the size chart on the product page rather than guessing from a label.
Length matters too on this blank, because the boxy cut is shorter than average. Measure from the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem of a shirt whose length you like.
Between two sizes?
Go down, not up. The extra room in the cut means the smaller size usually still reads relaxed, while the larger one starts to look like a nightshirt.
